One of my personal favourite breakout bands of the moment, and probably one of my favourite bands full stop, DMA’s are a group of australians with a love for both the britpop sound and its associated aesthetic, with lead vocalist and drummer Tommy O’Dell rarely seen on stage without his trademark Adidas smock and checked baseball cap. Their self-titled debut EP, released in 2015, just 3 years after their formation in Sydney in 2012, is a roaring love letter to British guitar pop, its lyricism and its unapologetically distinct sound. Opening with Laced, a poetic yet roaring number with a fundamental sing-along quality that seems to grab onto the listener and set the precedent for the rest of the EP to not let fo for its short 18 minute run time. The second track on this 5 song EP, Your Low showcases the more modern side of the band, that while they have clear britpop influences, their exposure to the early ‘00s indie scene shines through on this track, before resuming the blistering energy on fan favourite Feels Like 37. Overall, the EP feels very stripped back, it feels very much like a beginning, like the makings of a great band, and the relative underground success of their two subsequent albums, combined with the huge popularity of their cover of Cher’s Believe for Like a Version suggests that this trio are on the brink of becoming a powerful force within the world of guitar music...
